Description: MSC was awarded its third Atrium renovation project on board a Princess cruise ship. The Caribbean and Golden Princess being the first two. The Atrium included areas on decks 5, 6, and 7; the Piazza, Alfredo's Pizzeria, International Café, Internet Café, Vines, Lobby Bar, Crooners & Passenger's Services Desk.
The highlight of this area was the demolition of the two existing staircases between decks 5 & 6 and decks 6 & 7, and the replacement and repositioning of the two new sets. Also included in this renovation project was the Art Gallery and Boutiques.
Maritime Services Corp. has a great time-lapse video of the recent Grand Princess retrofit. The highlight of this area was the demolition of the two existing staircases between decks 5 & 6 and decks 6 & 7, and the replacement and repositioning of the two new sets.:
The Facts: Crew size was 177 and included joiners, tile layers, stone installers, carpet layers, electricians, HVAC & plumbing, faux and regular painters, welders, drapery & wall covering hangers. We had 35 20' containers, two scissor lifts, scaffolding and pump jacks to access the deck edges of decks 6 & 7. All of the flooring was replaced with wood, carpet, marble, and granite on 3 levels, including boutiques.
Approximately 500 sq. meters of this was stone. The stone and tile alone weighed 116,600 lbs. There were six custom marble and granite mosaics: in the central atrium deck 5, entrance to the Internet Café, the entrance/stair landing to deck 7 Crooner's, the deck 6 entrance to the Lobby Bar, the deck 5 stair landing, and the deck 5 Pizzeria.
All of the marble pieces were water jetted prior to install. We completely replaced 3 bars, International Café, Lobby Bar, and Pizzeria, as well as redecorating the Purser's desk and Crooner's. The elevators were stripped, painted and clad in aluminum and steel artwork with Cherry trim and custom formed acrylic light boxes running vertical on both sides. The deck was also fabricated with custom formed acrylic light boxes, Belbien, and wood moldings.
